Nash Dom CIC – Celebrating International Roma Day
11th April, 2025
Every year, Nash Dom traditionally joins communities around the world in celebrating International Roma Day – a moment to honour the rich cultural heritage of Roma people and raise awareness of the challenges they continue to face. 2025 wasn’t an exception.
At Nash Dom CIC and Walsall Cultural Centre, we are proud to stand with our Roma community – not only as friends but as partners in building a society rooted in understanding, respect, and shared humanity. Through our ongoing work, we aim to dismantle harmful myths, support intercultural communication, and promote active integration.
One of our dedicated volunteers, Pavol, and the founder of the local Roma Day celebration, shares a deep sense of pride in his heritage and tirelessly advocates for unity within the community.

“International Roma Day is more than just a celebration – it’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, and how much further we can go when we stand together. I’m proud of my Roma roots, and I believe in building bridges between communities. I am grateful to Juraj Modrak [CEO of Nash Dom CIC] and Nash Dom staff who always support Roma community in Walsall. Through Roma Day, I want to show young people that they don’t have to hide who they are – they can be proud, confident, and part of something bigger.”
Councillor Klara Margetts, who has supported our initiatives, shared how her experience living in the UK shaped her identity:
“Growing up in the Czech Republic, I didn’t always embrace my heritage. It was only after living in the UK’s multicultural environment that I came to truly appreciate and be proud of who I am.”

We were also delighted to welcome Councillor Eileen Russel, representing St Matthew’s in Walsall, who attended the celebration and shared in the joy of the occasion. Her support was warmly received by the community, and she spoke highly about the event’s positive atmosphere and meaningful message of unity.
While many Roma adults face difficulties with language barriers, cultural clashes, and discrimination – particularly in education and employment – young people are growing up more integrated. They speak fluent English, attend local schools, and are increasingly confident in embracing a mixed identity.
As we mark International Roma Day, let’s remind ourselves: we thrive when we build bridges, not walls. Together, through mutual respect and collaboration, we can create a society where all communities feel seen, valued, and proud of who they are.
